Ghosts and monsters are supposed to be scary, right? Well, not in the world of kawaii!
Japan’s kawaii culture is so big, it can even transform scary creatures into characters you want to hug. Ghosts become shy little friends, mythical monsters hang out in flower pots, and even a yeti can be ridiculously cute.
You probably already know a few of these spooky cuties from big kawaii brands like Sanrio, San-X, and even Pokémon. Still, Japan’s character world is full of lesser-known ones that are just waiting to be discovered.
So, just in time for Halloween, let’s meet some of the cutest Japanese ghost and monster characters around. Don’t worry. This is a very low-scare zone!
1. Hanamaruobake (はなまるおばけ)
Let’s start with a ghost who would rather cheer you on than haunt you! Hanamaruobake is a Sanrio character who debuted in 2023. Its name combines “hanamaru,” a flower-shaped mark used in Japan to praise someone for doing a great job, and “obake,” which means ghost.
True to its name, this cute ghost with a big red pencil secretly appears to give you a hanamaru for all your hard work. Marumaru is shy, loves sweet food, and is particularly good at hide-and-seek. Honestly, if a ghost is going to follow us around, we’d like this one, please!

2. Mimikyu (ミミッキュ)
Ever seen a Pokémon that looks like a slightly wonky Pikachu? That’s Mimikyu! It’s a little Ghost/Fairy-type Pokémon that hides underneath a cloth disguise that resembles Pikachu. According to its Pokédex information, Mimikyu lives in dark places away from sunlight and keeps its real creepy appearance hidden beneath its costume.
What’s actually underneath? Yeah... maybe we don’t need to know. Despite its scary backstory, Mimikyu has become ridiculously lovable.

3. Obakenu (オバケーヌ)
What if there wasn’t just one cute ghost, but an entire world of them? Meet Obakenu, a group of super cute ghosts from Japanese company CRUX.
It was created around a very simple idea: ghosts are usually scary, so why not make them cute instead? The character series debuted in 2020 and has since grown into a huge cast of adorable ghosts.
The original Obakenu loves surprising people, even though it can be a bit of a scaredy-cat itself. And once you start meeting the rest of the gang, things get wonderfully weird. There are animal ghosts, food-inspired ghosts, fantasy ghosts, and all sorts of other supernatural cuties. Basically, there seems to be an Obakenu for every mood.

4. Gengar (ゲンガー)
Okay, some might argue that Gengar is actually a little creepy. This round, purple Pokémon is a Ghost/Poison type known as the Shadow Pokémon. Its Pokédex entries describe Gengar hiding in shadows and causing sudden chills.
And yet… Look at that giant grin! Gengar has somehow become equally believable as a mischievous ghost and an enormous squishy plushie you’d happily put on your bed. Spooky? Yes. Huggable? Also yes!

5. Obake (おばけ) from Sumikko Gurashi
Did you know that even the famously shy Sumikko Gurashi gang has a resident ghost? Simply called Obake, this little ghost lives quietly in a corner of the attic. But there’s a very cute reason you don’t hear much from Obake: it doesn’t want to scare anyone.
Instead, Obake likes cleaning. A quiet ghost that cleans your attic instead of haunting it? We’ll take ten!
Explore our Sumikko Gurashi collection and find your favorite corner-loving cutie!
6. No-Face (カオナシ)
Okay, this one is definitely on the darker side of cute. No-Face, or Kaonashi, is the mysterious masked character from Studio Ghibli.
With a black body, expressionless white mask, and habit of silently appearing in places, No-Face has all the ingredients for a properly creepy character. And yet somehow, a No-Face plushie or a No-Face fluffy scarf looks… cute?!
We’re not going to pretend No-Face is secretly a cheerful little ghost. His role in Spirited Away is much more complicated than that. But he has become one of the movie’s most recognizable supernatural characters, and his simple design translates surprisingly well into the world of kawaii merchandise.
Just maybe don’t accept any mysterious gold from him.
7. Sabokappa (サボカッパ)
A kappa pretending to be a cactus. Honestly, we could probably end the description there. Sabokappa is a San-X character inspired by the kappa, a famous water-dwelling creature from Japanese folklore.
But instead of lurking around rivers, Sabokappa likes sitting inside a plant pot and pretending to be a cactus. He lives in a little flower shop surrounded by plants and spends his time with his pet, Piyokichi.

8. A Little Good Thing (ちょこっといいこと)
Apparently, one adorable kappa wasn’t enough for San-X. A Little Good Thing features another tiny kappa, but this one has an especially wholesome purpose.
The little character shares heartwarming words and encourages people to notice the small good things happening in everyday life, which is quite a career change for a creature with centuries of spooky folklore behind it

9. Puwawa (プワワ)
Kappa aren’t the only Japanese folklore creatures to get the kawaii treatment. Meet Puwawa, a lesser-known Sanrio character inspired by an umibōzu, a mysterious sea yōkai from Japanese folklore. Sounds ominous, but Sanrio’s version? Not so much.
Puwawa is a yellow character who gets along with living things and enjoys collecting seashells. According to the character’s story, it was born on a full-moon night while a shooting star crossed the sky.
10. Youkai Kids (ようかいきっず)
Why stop at one monster when you can have a whole gang? Youkai Kids is an older Sanrio group filled with second-generation monsters and supernatural creatures:
- Drumsuko, the son of Baron Dracula
- Muiragon, a mummy
- Majorine, a witch
- Kappei, a kappa
- Ooolong, a dragon
Basically, it’s Sanrio’s tiny monster squad.
Youkai Kids might not be nearly as famous today as Hello Kitty, My Melody, or Cinnamoroll, but that’s part of what makes them so fun to discover. Sanrio’s character history goes deep. Think you know Sanrio? Discover even more familiar faces and hidden gems in our complete Sanrio character guide!
11. Kaijyu Paradise (カイジュウパラダイス)
When you hear the word kaiju, giant city-destroying monsters probably come to mind. But San-X had other plans.
Kaijyu Paradise is a wonderfully retro group of cute kaiju characters that debuted in the 1980s. The gang includes Gao Gao-kun, Oyoyo Alien, little Garuru-kun, and other strange creatures who have adventures together in space.
They may technically be monsters, but they look much more likely to demand cuddles than to destroy Tokyo. We support peaceful kaiju!
12. Shyeti (シャイエティ)
Bigfoot has Sasquatch. The Himalayas have the Yeti. San-X has… Shyeti! And naturally, he’s cute and quirky. Shyeti is a shy yeti whose name plays on exactly that personality: shy + yeti. His story even includes rumors that there might be multiple unidentified Shaeitis running away somewhere.
13. Atsumare Nyankoromekuji (あつまれにゃんころめくじ)
Now things are getting weird. And we mean that as the highest compliment. Atsumare Nyankoromekuji are horned, cat-like creatures from San-X. They usually gather in groups and become much braver when they’re together.
Cute little horned cats already sound strange enough. But then, San-X described them as mutant creatures that split into a cat and a slug when they touch salt. Uhmmm.. I think we have a lot of questions.

14. Beatcats (ビートキャッツ)
Speaking of cats, we have another unusual cat character, this time from Sanrio. What makes Beatcats unusual? They’re cute, fluffy, a pop group, and a mix of vampires and zombie cats!
Several of the cats can transform into vampire forms, complete with wings and darker details. And then there’s Rico, an energetic yellow zombie cat covered in patches. A supernatural cat pop group sounds like something we just made up. We promise we didn’t.

15. Yutakun (ユータクン)
And finally, let’s end where we started: with a ghost.
Yutakun is another spooky-cute character hiding deep in Sanrio’s enormous archive. He’s a transparent little ghost who loves watermelon, hates the cold, and spends plenty of time sleeping and relaxing. He even worries that he isn’t impressive enough because he’s so laid-back.
Yutakun, please. You’re a watermelon-loving ghost who sleeps until lunchtime. You’re doing great.
Why Are Japan’s Monsters So Cute?
After meeting all these characters, one thing is pretty clear: kawaii doesn’t have to mean pink bows, fluffy puppies, and perfectly sweet characters. Sometimes kawaii is weird and spooky.
Japanese character culture has a wonderful way of taking creatures that might normally seem strange or scary and giving them personalities we can connect with. Suddenly, they have favorite foods, hobbies, friends, fears, and little quirks that make them strangely lovable. And maybe that contrast is exactly what makes spooky-cute characters so much fun.
So this Halloween, forget running away from the ghosts and monsters. We’d rather collect them!
